The Scout Date Night Index

Which cities actually make date night interesting?

172 cities ranked · 19,744 analyzed places · computed 8/27/2026 · score out of 100

The research question

Where is it easiest to build a genuinely good date — not just dinner and drinks?

Scout evaluates evening availability, activity variety, budget range, atmosphere, and whether the city can support several different kinds of date plans.

The score is built from the city's own inventory: categories, hours and dayparts, prices, audiences, vibe tags and indoor/outdoor attributes. Scout tests nine standardized dates against that inventory rather than counting places tagged date night, and no Scout-published date-night outing counts toward the score.

What a high score means

A high Date Night score means a city gives couples many strong ways to build a date across different budgets, moods, occasions and times of day — not one expensive restaurant strip and a row of cocktail bars.

What the index measures

Three things a city needs before date night is interesting

01

Many kinds of date, not one

Whether first dates, weeknight dates, activity-first dates, outdoor dates, arts dates, dessert dates, playful dates and special-occasion dates are all genuinely possible here.

  • Date Night Variety
  • Date Plan Feasibility
02

Something to do after 6pm

Whether dinner, dessert and coffee, entertainment, culture and evening activities are still usable at night — measured with bars capped so alcohol cannot define date night.

  • Evening Depth
03

Budgets and atmosphere that work

Whether good dates exist at every budget from free to splurge, whether the options are well reviewed, and whether the places are conversation-friendly, scenic, romantic or playful enough to matter.

  • Price Range
  • Quality of Date Options
  • Atmosphere & Experience Quality

Scout Variety Index and The Scout Date Night Index measure different things

Plotted against Scout Variety Index, the two measures move together only loosely. Aurora sits above the median on Scout Variety Index but below it on this index, while Gilbert does the reverse. A strong showing on one index does not carry over to the other.

By dimension

Where each component is strongest

Component leaderboards explain why cities land where they do overall.

Best cities for date night variety

Whether the city supports meaningfully different kinds of dates — first date, casual weeknight, activity-first, dinner-plus, outdoor, arts and culture, coffee or dessert, no-alcohol, anniversary, late-night, rainy-day and playful/competitive — measured across categories with diminishing returns, not by counting places tagged date night.

Best cities for date plan feasibility

Whether Scout can actually assemble nine standardized date scenarios from the city's own inventory using category, hours, price, audience, vibe, daypart and indoor/outdoor attributes. No Scout-published outing counts.

Best cities for evening depth

Strength of usable date inventory after 6pm across dinner, dessert and coffee, entertainment, cultural venues and evening activities. Alcohol-led venues are capped so bars cannot carry the component.

Best cities for quality of date options

Review-weighted Google rating of the date-capable set, shrunk toward the national average and requiring a minimum rated-place count so a 4.9 with 15 reviews does not outrank a 4.8 with 3,000.

Best cities for price range

Whether good dates exist at free/nearly free, under-$50, moderate and premium budgets. Cities are rewarded for spanning tiers, not for premium inventory alone.

Best cities for atmosphere & experience quality

Presence of places that actually work for dates: conversation-friendly, romantic, scenic, intimate, playful, interactive, unique or good for lingering — plus walkable pairing potential.

Methodology

How the score is calculated

Scout computes The Scout Date Night Index from its own database of verified places and Scout place intelligence — categories, dayparts, prices, audiences, vibe tags, indoor/outdoor attributes and review-weighted ratings. It deliberately ignores how many date-night outings Scout has published in a city: publishing volume is Scout coverage, not evidence that a city is good for dates.

This edition covers 172 cities and 19,744 AI-analyzed places. A city is only ranked once at least 30 of its published places have completed Scout's place-intelligence analysis, at least 12 of them are usable non-alcohol evening options and at least four activity categories are represented — otherwise the city is shown as developing research coverage instead of being ranked.

How Scout builds the Date Night score

Scout identifies the places and activities that can reasonably work as a stop on a date — food, activities, culture, dessert and coffee, scenic and romantic settings — rather than only what is tagged date night.

Scout measures how varied those options are across twelve different kinds of date, from first dates and weeknight dates to outdoor, arts, playful, late-night and anniversary dates, with diminishing returns so one deep category cannot carry a city.

Scout checks what remains usable in the evening, counting dinner, dessert, entertainment, culture and evening activities. Bars, breweries and cocktail lounges are capped so alcohol cannot define the component.

Scout tests nine standardized date scenarios against the city's real inventory — first date under $50 total, casual weeknight, dinner plus activity, activity plus dessert or drinks, no-alcohol, outdoor, anniversary, late-night and rainy-day — requiring a distinct place for every role that fits the budget and daypart.

Scout evaluates quality with review-weighted ratings shrunk toward the national average, price range across free through premium, and whether the inventory contains conversation-friendly, romantic, scenic, playful and low-friction places.

The six component scores are normalized onto 0–100 and weighted for comparison across cities.

How the score is built

Date Night Variety (25%): Whether the city supports meaningfully different kinds of dates — first date, casual weeknight, activity-first, dinner-plus, outdoor, arts and culture, coffee or dessert, no-alcohol, anniversary, late-night, rainy-day and playful/competitive — measured across categories with diminishing returns, not by counting places tagged date night.

Date Plan Feasibility (25%): Whether Scout can actually assemble nine standardized date scenarios from the city's own inventory using category, hours, price, audience, vibe, daypart and indoor/outdoor attributes. No Scout-published outing counts.

Evening Depth (20%): Strength of usable date inventory after 6pm across dinner, dessert and coffee, entertainment, cultural venues and evening activities. Alcohol-led venues are capped so bars cannot carry the component.

Quality of Date Options (10%): Review-weighted Google rating of the date-capable set, shrunk toward the national average and requiring a minimum rated-place count so a 4.9 with 15 reviews does not outrank a 4.8 with 3,000.

Price Range (10%): Whether good dates exist at free/nearly free, under-$50, moderate and premium budgets. Cities are rewarded for spanning tiers, not for premium inventory alone.

Atmosphere & Experience Quality (10%): Presence of places that actually work for dates: conversation-friendly, romantic, scenic, intimate, playful, interactive, unique or good for lingering — plus walkable pairing potential.

Counts that could simply reward big cities are normalized: date inventory uses diminishing returns, variety and atmosphere use evenness across slots rather than raw totals, and alcohol-led venues are capped so they can never carry a component.

Scores are recomputed on every refresh, so a city's position moves as coverage deepens or as venues open and close. Underlying place data is verified against Google Places; outings are human- or AI-composed and reviewed before publishing.

What this index measures — and what it doesn't

This index measures

  • · how many meaningfully different kinds of date the city supports
  • · whether standardized dates can actually be assembled from real places
  • · how much usable date inventory remains after 6pm
  • · review-weighted quality of the date-capable set
  • · whether good dates exist at free, cheap, moderate and premium budgets
  • · whether places are conversation-friendly, scenic, romantic, playful or easy to linger in

This index does not measure

  • · relationship happiness or marriage rates
  • · dating-app quality or how easy it is to meet someone
  • · how friendly residents are
  • · nightlife or bar density on its own
  • · how many date-night outings Scout has published in a city

Scores reflect the places, events and activity inventory present in the Scout dataset — not every business or activity that exists in a city. No component is divided by how much Scout has published in a city, and Scout-published outings are never counted as evidence — publishing volume is coverage, not a characteristic of the city. Cities without enough analyzed places, priced places or represented categories are left out of the rankings entirely. Coverage labels on this page describe Scout dataset completeness only; they are not statistical confidence intervals.
