Privacy Policy

Scout Places helps people find things to do nearby. This policy covers scoutplaces.com and the Scout Places apps for iOS and Android.

What we collect

  • Account information. Your email address and, if you sign in with Google or Apple, the basic profile they return. Used to sign you in and to keep your saved plans.
  • Location. Only when you tap “Use my location.” It is used to rank nearby recommendations and is not stored on our servers or sold. You can always pick a city manually instead.
  • Photos. Photos you attach to a Moment. Location metadata (EXIF) is stripped before upload, and images are screened automatically for safety before publishing.
  • Content you create. Saved places, plans, Moments, questions and answers.
  • Device tokens. If you opt in to notifications, so we can send plan reminders.
  • Usage data. Aggregate analytics about pages viewed, used to improve the product.

How we use it

To run your account, generate and store plans, personalize recommendations to your area, send notifications you asked for, moderate user content, and improve Scout Places. We do not sell personal data and we do not use it for third-party advertising or cross-app tracking.

Service providers

We use vendors to operate the product: hosting and database, AI planning and content moderation, mapping and place data, SMS delivery for texted itineraries, and booking partners (such as Viator and Expedia) when you choose to book. Booking links may include an affiliate reference, and we may earn a commission at no cost to you.

Your choices

  • Location, camera, photos and notifications are all opt-in and revocable in device settings.
  • Your Passport is private by default; making it public is an explicit toggle.
  • You can delete your account and all associated content at any time from your profile. Deletion is permanent.

iOS and Android apps

The mobile apps request the following device permissions. Each is optional, requested only at the moment it is needed, and revocable at any time in iOS Settings or Android app settings. Declining a permission does not block you from using the rest of the app.

  • Location (while using the app). Used only to sort nearby places, plans and tours by distance. We do not collect background or “always” location, we do not track your movements, and coordinates are used in-session for ranking rather than stored as a location history on our servers.
  • Camera. Used only when you choose to take a photo for a Moment.
  • Photo library. Used only when you pick an existing photo for a Moment. We access the images you select, not your whole library, and EXIF metadata — including GPS coordinates — is stripped before upload.
  • Push notifications. Opt-in. If you allow them, we store an anonymous device token so we can send plan reminders and Moment prompts. Turning notifications off removes the token from use.
  • Sign in with Apple. If you use it, Apple sends us a user identifier and an email address, which may be Apple’s private relay address. We use it only for your account and never receive your Apple password.
  • Phone number. Only if you ask us to text an itinerary to you. It is used to deliver that message through our SMS provider and is not used for marketing.

The apps do not use third-party advertising SDKs, do not request App Tracking Transparency permission, and do not track you across other companies’ apps or websites. Data collected in the apps is linked to your account only where noted above, and you can delete all of it from your profile.

Children

Scout Places is not directed to children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect their data.
